World's Largest Outdoor Swimming Pool at San Alfonso del Mar Resort in Chile

The swimming pool at the San Alfonso del Mar Resort in Algarrobo in Chile is regarded as the largest outdoor swimming pool in the world. This enormous pool covers an area of about 20 acres and has a length of more than one kilometer. With such a huge size, the swimming at the San Alfonso del Mar Resort has no competitors - literally. It is six-times bigger than its closest competitor, the Orthlieb Pool in Casablanca, Morocco.

The swimming pool at the San Alfonso del Mar Resort is also regarded as the world's deepest swimming pool. The pool is 115 feet deep at its deepest end. The swimming pool contains some 250,000,000 liters (66,000,000 US gallons) of seawater crystal clear water. The water is pumped, filtered and treated from the Pacific Ocean to use in the swimming pool.

Developed by Chilean company Crystal Lagoons, the pool was opened in December 2006. It took almost five years to be constructed. An estimated amount of US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion total was used for the construction and almost US$4 million is used in annual maintenance of the pool. The pool itself has become a popular tourist destination in Chile.
